Preevanda received her B.A. from Jammu University and her LL.B. from the University of Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India. After being called to the New Delhi Bar and working as a lawyer for three years, she obtained her Master in Laws in Public International Law from the University of Minnesota. She then immigrated to Canada and obtained a second LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School and the Joint Committee of Accreditation. She articled at Green & Spiegel, and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1998.
She has been practising exclusively immigration and refugee law since 1998 and has been working in association with Leigh Salsberg since 2011.
Preevanda has extensive experience in all areas of Canadian immigration, refugee and citizenship law. She assists clients with applications for permanent residence including under the Federal Skilled Worker program, Canada Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Programs, family sponsorships, humanitarian and compassionate applications, work/visitor/study permits, refugee claims, PRRAs and citizenship applications. Her extensive litigation practice includes appeal work at all three divisions of the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court of Canada.
As head of the educational committee of the Refugee Lawyers’ Association of Ontario Preevanda has been an active member of the organization’s executive and Access to Justice Committee. She has mentored numerous people seeking to work in the immigration field, including lawyers, law students, articling students, paralegals and consultants.
From 2006 to 2011, Preevanda was the immigration lawyer affiliated with the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic. She developed a specialty working with women survivors of violence and continues to work closely with women’s shelters throughout the GTA.
Preevanda speaks fluent Hindi, Kashmiri, and Punjabi works with interpreters in all languages.
